Advancing the Patient Experience of Care, Part Five: Creating an Environment Supportive of Multiple Cultures

This activity will focus on the importance of understanding and accepting cultural differences of patients in a clinical setting. It will identify the differences between cultural competence and cultural humility and why both are needed in providing a positive patient experience. Prior learning related to communication and motivational interviewing (MI) will connect with the enhanced experience of care for individuals of all cultures.

Learning Objectives:

• Define culture
• Differentiate between cultural competence and cultural humility
• Discuss why it is important to be both culturally competent and exhibit cultural humility in a health care setting
• Identify how effective communication and use of MI skills support cultural humility
• Develop a plan to enhance cultural humility impacting a significant culture within one’s practice
